Discussion
Welcome to my Web Site.  I am a consultant, with more than 40 years at the leading edge of information technology: here you'll find information about me and my professional interests.  This site has been developed to allow you to view and download various presentations and other resource materials.   Please feel free to contact me directly also.   Click here to see my CV.

My main professional interests are:-

The Strategy (Business) of Information Technology.  How IT is changing our business lives, determining which IT investments are worth making, and ensuring that maximum value is obtained from these investments.  As well as a consulting focus, this has been the subject of a two day university course.

Development Methodology. How do organizations most-effectively develop systems that meet business needs, and control costs over the development life cycle.  The secret is NOT "Understanding the systems development life cycle", it is adopting a QUALITY MINDSET, and choosing the APPROPRIATE life cycle model for your project. Although I have successfully undertaken projects using a formal methodology, I strongly prefer an agile approach where customer value can be maximised.  Most of my recent projects have used this approach, and have had paybacks of 2 months or less.

Project Management.  A special interest has been "Critical Chain Project Management".  I have presented courses on both conventional project management and CCPM, and co-authored a paper "A Critical Look at Critical Chain", presented in London in June 2001, that evaluated the contribution of CCPM to project management practice.  I regularly teach a 2-day course on "The Essentials of Project Management" through Brightstar training, and I'd be keen to present this as an in-house course also.

Web DevelopmentMainly to upgrade my technical skills (I used to be an expert programmer in the days of PL/I and mainframes - could I still compete with current technology?), and also as a semi-retirement interest, I have developed a web site using Microsoft's ASP.Net and Visual Basic.  This site has won acclaim for its functionality and for solving several problems endemic to web-based genealogy, but like most web sites it is not a lucrative money earner.

The Newsletters page is an archive of some newsletters that I sent out to a mailing list.

On the General Resources page you'll find some resources - papers and software - that you can download, such as a business case template, and software for managing incremental development.

Thank you for visiting this site.
